Dr. Matthew Smith and The

University of Kansas Symphonic Band

Concert Band

Dr. Matthew O. Smith is Associate Director of Bands at the University of Kansas, where he conducts the Symphonic Band, the Marching Jayhawks, and teaches in the School of Music. He is also the director of the nationally renowned Midwestern Music Camps held at KU. He has held similar positions in the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, Iowa State University, Baylor University, and the University of Michigan.

Raised in Fairfax, Virginia, Smith received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After teaching in the Maryland public schools, he completed a master's degree in music education from the University of Michigan. He completed his Doctor of Musical Arts in Wind Conducting from Michigan State University. Smith’s doctoral research focused on the on the early works of composer Joel Puckett, and he has also worked with composers Libby Larsen and Michael Torke, among others.  Additional interests include conducting pedagogy and instrumental music education, and Smith also serves as co-music director of the Lawrence Community Orchestra.

Smith is in frequent demand as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator, and has presented clinics and research in the United States and Germany. He has been published in The Instrumentalist, the Journal of Band Research, and the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series. His professional affiliations include the College Band Directors National Association, the National Association for Music Education, Kansas Bandmasters Association, and the Kansas Music Educators Association. He also holds membership in Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and is an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma.

Mississippi State university percussion ensemble, Director; Dr. Jason Baker

Percussion Quartet

The Mississippi State University Percussion Ensemble is comprised of student percussionists with four of them being featured for the quartet on the album. Those students are William Brotherton, Percussion 1; Quinlan Kurtycz, Percussion 2; Griffin Bowers, Percussion 3; and Jason Nester, Percussion 4. The ensemble is directed by Dr. Jason Baker.

Frye Music Duo

Tenor & Viola Duo

Wesley Frye is an in-demand tenor, collaborative pianist, and music director throughout the Twin Cities metro and beyond. Recently, he received second prize as a pianist in the Sparks and Wiry Cries songSLAM at the 2022 NATS Conference in Chicago, and was the resident tenor at Opera Naples in Florida. It was there he debuted roles in Pirates of Penzance, Tosca, and Glory Denied. Wesley is also the co-owner and operator of Frye Music Duo, an in-demand duo for weddings throughout the Upper Midwest.

Marissa Frye is an in-demand performer and teacher in the upper Midwest. Residing in the Twin Cities with her husband Wesley (tenor & pianist), she is a full time freelance violist and violinist, and co-founder and owner of Frye Music Duo. She received her undergraduate degree in Viola Performance from Luther College, and holds a Masters of Music in Viola Performance from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.

Joseph Pazanowski

Joe Paznowski is a percussionist and educator from Ashburn, Virginia. He focuses primarily on inspiring a passion for the arts not only in his students, but in his audience members with each performance. He can often be found performing in a variety of ensembles in the D.C. Metropolitan area, but his primary interest has always been performing new and experimental works, most of which focus on the conservation of the environment and natural soundscapes. 

 

Joe holds a B.M. in Instrumental Performance from George Mason University ('18) and an M.M. in Instrumental Performance from the University of Miami ('20).

Dr. Philip BEATTY

Tuba

Philip Beatty is a tubist who is a highly motivated and passionate teacher, performer, and entrepreneur. He did his doctoral studies at the University of Miami. He is the principal tubist for the Florida Wind Band and is on faculty at Hillsborough Community College.

Daniel Echazabal

Trumpet

Daniel Echazabal is a trumpet player who currently resides in Florida. He is an active performer of jazz trumpet and holds two degrees from Florida International University.

Kyle Pearl

Cello

Kyle Pearl is a cellist and composer based out of Miami, Florida. He has curated calls for new works to showcase emerging composer and is dedicated to playing new music. He received his Bachelors of Music at the University of Miami in 2022.
